Voters’ complaints received: PAFFREL

DailyMirror:

More than 450 complaints and clarifications have been received regarding voters’ registration prior to the local government elections which is to be held this March, People’s Action for a Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) yesterday said.

The election monitor said complaints received  had been centered on the voters’ registration for the year 2010 that begins in June. PAFFREL stated that the complaints received were due to voters not receiving the registration form, not being issued receipts after the registration form was handed over and some cases where the Grama Niladhari had refused the registration form.

Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi urged the public to check the voters’ registration list to confirm that they were registered and to correct any prevalent mistakes that might have occurred. “We urge the public to check the voter’s registration list as this is the time to correct any mistakes if there are any by appealing to the Elections Department,” he said.

Mr. Hettiarachchi said that the organisation had also asked main political parties to inform their supporters and the general public to check the registration list as well.

He said that it was crucial that the public checked the list as it would protect the rights of the voter and also ensure the voting strength of the public is maintained. He said that the list could be viewed until January 31.
