TRAINING ON INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

Colombo August 24-28, 2011

INTRODUCTION:

For over two years, Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has worked closely with Sri Lanka’s journalistic community, recognizing the sector’s vital role in promoting good governance and its function as a message multiplier. TISL has conducted a series of trainings to enhance the capacity of regional journalists in investigative journalism with the support of Freidrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) whereby new networks were created and skills were developed.

As part of the collaborative effort to promote investigative journalism in Sri Lanka, TISL together with FES has developed an investigative journalism resource book, a practitioner’s handbook and a trainer’s manual exclusively for local journalists. These products, the first of its kind to be developed in Sri Lanka will help enhance professionalism among practitioners and prove invaluable to future trainers in journalism.

THE PROGRAM:

Investigative journalism promotes good governance, equity and inclusion.
TISL and FES identify investigative journalism as an anti corruption tool and a vehicle that enhances quality journalism that contributes to democracy and advocates social justice and reform.

Public spirited journalism can flourish only with strong civic engagement.  While the investigative journalism practitioners play the role of message multipliers, it is the conscious citizens, the whistleblowers and activists through proactive sharing of information who enhance journalism that fosters inclusion and promotes democracy, equity and justice in a society.

DURATION & VENUE:

Four – day residential training program
• Dates: August 24- 27, 2011, Colombo.

WHAT IS THE PURPSOSE OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM?

Journalists as the Fourth Estate in a democracy play a pivotal role in promoting democracy. They are message multipliers who influence systems and citizenry both by sharing evidence-based information.

While promoting skilled investigative journalism in post war Sri Lanka by the practitioners, TISL believes that these concepts should be shared with a wider cross section of people to encourage enhanced citizens’ engagement in the democracy discourse.

The training program intends transferring knowledge to a combination of journalists and trainers who in turn will build the essential skills of select others including those currently engaged in the craft ad other stakeholder groups in their respective localities.

To achieve the above purpose, TISL will undertake a series of training programs commencing in August 2011 to groom a select number of journalists and trainers on basic methods of investigative journalism through a well- designed Train the Trainer (ToT) program series. The training will be conducted by an internationally reputed trainer with the support of local experts.
