Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) is concerned with the outcome of the 8 December 2003 criminal case involving the Sri Lanka Telecom Chairmen.
The case went before the Colombo Additional Magistrate, after hearing the motion filed by the counsel for the suspect discharged him on a Poya Holiday in a manner that did not represent any transparent judicial process.
As a result this case has raised many contentious issues warranting it to be seriously addressed by the legal and judicial community along with the public. TISL sees this case as highlighting the deterioration of integrity in the legal profession and minor judiciary.
Under these circumstances TISL wishes to state that the dignity of the judiciary be restored without permitting any similar incidents to take place because they are detrimental to the justice system. Also, such actions do not promote the interest of good governance and ideas of an independent judiciary.
