The Switzerland Ambassoder to Sri Lanka, Ruth Flint hailed Transparency International Sri Lanka for implementing extensive programmes to enhance integrity in the country working with all stake holders including public and private sectors.
She made these remarks when she visited the Sri Lanka’s chapter of the global civil society organization – TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL and met its Executive Director, J.C. Weliamuna, member of the Board of Directors and senior staff members. During her stay at the office she was briefed about the programmes initiated by TISL for the past few years.
While briefing Her Excellency, Mr J. C. Weliamuna explained that TISL is an autonomous body and as a national chapter, it is mandated to combat systemic weaknesses that allow corruption and does not undertake investigations of alleged corruption or expose individual cases. Weliamuna also stated that the annual work plan is prepared every year based on a five-year Strategic Plan with the guidance and approval of the Board of Directors.
“Governments cannot fight corruption on its own. It needs partnerships. United Nations Convention against Corruption, to which Sri Lanka is a signatory, requires the government to work in collaboration with civil society to eliminate corruption. We are an ally of the Government and we are prepared to work in collaboration with the Government to establish a Right to information Act in Sri Lanka “he added.
