Sri Lanka’s Bribery Commission asked to investigate irregularities in the health sector

A complaint has been filed before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption in Sri Lanka calling for a probe on the many alleged irregularities that take place in the health sector.

The complaint has stated that there have been many irregularities, especially corruption, that has taken place in the Health Ministry’s Supplies Division.

It is alleged that some health officials are engaged in purchasing pharmaceuticals without following tender procedures and that inferior quality pharmaceuticals have been purchased at higher prices.

The Bribery Commission has been requested to probe these and several other irregularities in the health sector.

Meanwhile, the former Head of the Health Ministry Supplies Division, Dr. Sarath Weerabandara on June 6, 2010 had written to the President about the irregularities in the Supplies Division in the Health Ministry.

On March 30, 2012, Head of the President’s Investigations Unit, Thilak Iddamalagoda had responded saying the report with the recommendations has been handed over to the President and a copy had been sent to the Health Minister to take action.
