Sri Lanka trade union leaders linked to corruption in public enterprises, says Minister

The Chairman of Sri Lanka’s parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera says that some trade union leaders are also connected to the massive frauds of public money in certain public enterprises.

The COPE recently revealed that several public enterprises are paying the income tax of their employees with the funds of the enterprise.

The Minister says that the senior officials of some public enterprises were enjoying perks and benefits that have not been approved by the cabinet.

He pointed out that such officials have given access to perks and benefits to the trade union leaders also to silence them.

Minister Gunasekera says that normally the trade union leaders give details of corruption in the public enterprises to media but they avoid doing so because they also have access to benefits.
