Registration of new political parties suspended

The Election Commissioner’s Department would not be able to register new political parties until June next year since the gazetting of amendments to the Parliamentary Elections Act passed by Parliament recently are pending, an official of the department said.

Deputy Election Commissioner W.P. Sumanasiri told Daily Mirror that the Elections Department has not yet received the Parliamentary Elections Amendment Act No 58 of 2009, and until it was received and gazetted the Department is unable to register new political parties. He added that since several major elections are on the cards in the coming months, the registration of new political parties will get further delayed even if the Amendment is received by them since no parties are registered during an election.

He said several new political parties had already made applications to the Elections Commissioner for registration.
