President Mahinda Rajapaksa has dissolved Parliament and the gazette notification to this effect has been sent to the government printer, Presidential spokesman Lucien Rajakarunanayake told Daily Mirror Online.

General elections are expected to be held on April 8 and nominations for the polls are to be called between February 19-26, sources had earlier told Daily Mirror online.

Key political parties contesting the elections including the ruling UPFA and the main opposition UNP are in the process of finalizing the nominations of their parties for the polls.
