President asks people to be corruption sleuths

Corruption and malpractices in State funded development project could be eliminated only if the public in the respective project areas were alert like the People’s committees (Janatha Committees) some years ago, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told a meeting of the Kandy based media personnel on Saturday (11) afternoon.

The meeting was held at the Kandy Janadhipathi Mandiraya and coordinated by Central Province Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa.

The President said that complaints of corruption and malpractices in State funded projects were rampant but without the support of the public such immoral activities could not be checked.

During a certain period, some years ago, organizations named ‘Janatha Committees’ kept vigil and when they observed any wrong doing they brought it to immediate notice of the political leadership of the area, President Rajapaksa recalled.

Timely action was taken to prevent such corruption then, the President said.

A similar system should be adopted by the residents in the neighbourhood of any State sponsored development project, he said.
