Presenting of Right to Information Bill put off

The government has postponed the presenting of the much-awaited Right to Information Act to Parliament which was scheduled to be tabled today (08).

Parliament Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka yesterday said the government would not be able to present the draft Bill on Tuesday as scheduled as there was a delay by the Northern Provincial Council’s approval for the bill. The Northern Provincial Council was scheduled to meet again on March 10, the minister said, adding that he hoped that the council would approve the Bill on that day itself.

Once the NPC approval was granted, the government would present it to Parliament at the next sitting session. The delay had caused by the submission of the bill to the Governor of the Northern Province instead of the Chief Minister of the Council, the minister said.
