Over 28,000 lost their jobs

The government yesterday said that 28,159 jobs had been lost during the first quarter of 2009 due to global economic crisis.This was revealed in Parliament in response to a query raised by UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella.

The government said that a study had been launched with the participation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to explore the possibility of setting up of an unemployment benefit insurance scheme.
