Over 110 lands complaints from Eastern Province

Public in the Eastern Province showed a keen interest in receiving l advice on land issues at legal advice camps held in Ampara and Batticaloa districts recently.

The camps were conducted by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) jointly with OXFAM International under the project ‘People’s Action for Right to Land’.

More than 110 cases were reported at two camps with the vast majority coming from Ampara district. 84 cases were received at the camp held at Ampara Town Hall on 14th February. At the Batticaloa camp held at Mahajana College the following day, 33 complaints were received.

The non-issue of permits for State lands occupied by the public, delays in receiving deeds for the lands, illegal sale of State land take over and allocation of unlawfully occupied lands by the Government were among the reported cases.
