Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Prison Reforms Minister D.E.W. Gunasekara were elected as the Chairmen of the Public Account Committee (PAC) and the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) respectively yesterday.
Opposition MPs demanded the two posts be given to them and voted against these appointments. The UNP nominated Rauf Hakeem and Karu Jayasuriya for the posts. However, they were voted out by ruling party members. Opposition Whip John Amaratunga said the govt. was heading towards dictatorship and it became even clearer through this move.
We contested to show objection to the appointments ,” he said.
