New Inland Revenue chief to implement improved tax policy

The new Commissioner General of the Inland Revenue Department, K.M.S. Kandegedara pledged to make the department a vibrant government institution by taking up the challenge of implementing the government’s new tax policy which would bring a change to the institution.

Kandegedara who assumed duties yesterday said he was ready to take up the challenge of implementing the new tax policy of the government which would be approved by the Parliament shortly. He said it would be implemented after the mini budget. “There would be a change in work of the department when the new tax policy is implemented,” he added.

He recalled the Inland Revenue Department was a vibrant government institution and pledged to bring that image back. Kandegedara called for the support of all members of the staff to rebuild this reputation.

The new Inland Revenue Chief said he was aware of the issues faced by the employees of the institution and was ready to solve all these through dialogue. “We will not be able to resolve all issues to the satisfaction of all employees but would do our best to come up with the best solution,” he said.

The Deputy Secretary, Treasury, Udaya Seneviratne who was the chief guest at the ceremony mentioned that Kandegedara was given the post when there were two senior people in the department. He assured that these two officers would not be neglected as justice would be done to them. He said Kandegedara was appointed to the post as the Ministry needed an officer who could take up the challenges and take control of the department for a couple of years.

He stressed the importance of making the department sophisticated to go on a new journey and pointed out that the new Commissioner General was appointed at a crucial time. “Inland Revenue Department is the most important government department and the Ministry of Finance would do its utmost to develop it,” he pledged, expressing confidence that the new Commissioner General would be successful in fulfilling this development goal.
