Political parties and independent groups contesting the April 8 general election have violated the election law by putting up co-ordinating offices in excess of the number stipulated in the Parliamentary Election Act, polls observers said yesterday.
The Act states that each political party and independent group can have only one election co-ordinating office for every polling booth.
People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said it had noticed 15 political offices belonging to the same party in the Matara town alone.
After a meeting with election officials and senior police officers in the south, PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said only four applications had been received the registration of election offices.
“This means political parties and independent groups are reluctant to register their offices. We see party offices springing up everywhere,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said adding that there had been a decline in election violence during the last few days.“It is a positive sign we observed during our tour,” he said.
