The keenness of the youth to fight against corruption was demonstrated recently at a workshop held in Matara by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL).
“We will share the knowledge gained on corruption and anti-corruption initiatives with our colleagues. This workshop will undoubtedly create a group of leaders that will reject corruption, stand up against wrongful things and be energetic” said a rural youth.
“My knowledge about corruption increased today. This program will help us to face the world as active and responsible citizens” said another.
There were 45 participants in the workshop held under TISL’s Youth Integrity Project (YIP) on 24th October 2013 at the Sarvodaya Center in Matara.
The participants who represented various youth groups in Matara were trained on what is corruption and effects of corruption and how corruption victimizes the youth. TISL trainers shared the findings of the recently conducted YIP survey which revealed that a vast majority of youth reject corruption and are prepared to fight against corruption.
Further, their capacities were enhanced on corruption complaint mechanism available in Sri Lanka and new media initiatives to tackle corruption.
TISL’s Ananda Jayasekara, Jagath Liyanaaerachchi,Sashee de Mel and Nauli Wimalarathna conducted the sessions.
After the workshop the youth commended the efforts of TISL and requested to conduct similar training programmes in other areas too.
