The grassroots level development of the new UPFA government will be entrusted to some 14,400 ‘Jana Sabha Secretariats’ (JSS) established at each Grama Niladhari Divisions islandwide, Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said yesterday.
Addressing the media after assuming duties at his office at the World Trade Center, Minister Yapa said the interviews to recruit Secretaries who will head each Jana Sabha had already begun.
The Jana Sabha Secretaries will be recruited from among the graduates, he added.
The objective is to take the development to the village which was a pledge under the Mahinda Chintana Idiri Dekma policy framework, he said.
Under the proposed development strategy all state services and infrastructure, economic, irrigation and rural development activities will be planned and implemented through the JSS offices, Minister Yapa said.
Each JSS office will receive an annual budgetary allocation for its state services and development programmes. Samurdhi officers, Agriculture Development Officers, Grama Niladaris and Family Health Nurses will serve under the Jana Sabha Secretariats and it will function under the Divisional Secretariats, Minister Yapa said.
All infrastructure, irrigation, electrification, water supply, and other utility services will be planned, initiated and carried out by the Jana Saba offices. There will be no room for irregularities, misappropriations or corruptions as calling and awarding of tenders will be handled by the Jana Saba offices that comprises members of the relevant Pradeshiya Saba, MOH, state sector Engineers of line ministries and other public officials.
