Items sold by auction disappears from stores

The Audit Unit of the National Water Supply and Drainage Broad had commenced an inquiry last Tuesday (14) into the disappearance of 20,000 defective water meters from the Ratmalana, Polwatta main branch.

The NWS&DB had sold 48,000 defective meters at an auction and a private company had bought them for rupees eighteen million.

Out of the 48,000 meters bought at the auction 28,000 meters were taken while 20,000 meters were kept in the stores hoping to take them the following day. After a few days when the representatives of the company came to take them, they found the meters had disappeared.

When the company representatives complained about the disappearance of the meters, an inquiry had been initiated by the Officials of the Water Board.

The total value of the disappeared water meters were about rupees 6 million. Employees of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board say on a certain night thieves had broke open the stores and removed the water meters.

The Store Keeper had informed the authorities of the state of insecurity of the stores earlier.

When the General Manager K.L.L. Premnath was asked to explain, he refused to respond.
