INCIDENTS OF BRIBERY RAPIDLY INCREASING

The Commission to Investigate Allegation of Bribery or Corruption says that a significant increase has occurred in the number of bribery complaints it receives with a total of 3,163 complaints being reported in the year 2012 alone.

The most number of complaints received last year were involving the education sector with a total of 440 complaints being reported while complaints regarding the police department had reached 318.

Bribery Commission Director General Lakshmi Jayawickarama stated the number of complaints regarding local government institutions have significantly increased.

A total of 147 raids were carried out within last year out of which 77 had been successful. Ninety-five persons were arrested during those operations while 22 of them were police officers, the commission said.

The public is urged to report any incident of bribery to the bribery commission’s hotline – 1954.
