First killing in Mawathagama

The Mawathagama police said it was investigating the death of a supporter of Vayamba Provincial Council Chairman and United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) candidate R.D Wimaladasa on Sunday night at Barandana in Mawathagama.

The investigations, into the first death that had occurred during the general elections campaign, were being directed by Kurunegala SSP Vass Gunawardena.

Police media spokesman Preshantha Jayakody said no suspects had been arrested so far.

He said the deceased Jeewan Prasanna Jayawardena (26) was on his way home with three of his friends in a double cab after having canvassed in the area when some others travelling in another double cab which overtook the first vehicle fired several shots at its occupants killing Mr. Jayawardena who was seated behind the driver.

Police said they believed the suspects might have attempted to kill Mr. Wimaladasa and his two sons. His elder son was killed during the 2001 general elections.
