TISL recently initiated a programme to educate the media and the Public on the Right to Information (RTI) on the importance of RTI in upholding democratic rule.
Information being a key element in a democratic framework, TISL believes that anyone in society requires knowledge of government processes and actions and he or she should have guaranteed access to information held by government institutions. As a leading organization in promoting good governance, TISL also believes the existence of a law on the right to information will strengthen democracy in the country.
The project commenced recently with an introductory workshop on RTI for Uva Community Radio. The workshop, held in Bandarawela was attended by the staff of the Uva Community Radio.
TISL Deputy Executive Director Rukshana Nanayakkara outlined the importance of RTI for the people to get information on matters relating to their needs. Advocacy Unit Director Dilrukshi Handunetti briefed the participants on access to information legislation in other countries reminding that such legislation is already in operation in over 85 countries in the world. Communications Unit Director Shan Wijethunge spoke on the importance of RTI for Community Radio. He was followed by Media Officer Ananda Jayasekara who explained the link between RTI and Media.
Group discussions were held to identify issues related to the community which can be highlighted in the RTI programmes through media. In the coming months TISL will sponsor radio programmes over UVA Community Radio which will highlight the importance of the access to information.
TISL’s objective is to be actively involved in an effort to mobilize a broad coalition of stakeholders to support the adoption of RTI legislation in Sri Lanka.
