Duty-free bonanza from this week

jeepDailyMirror

The government will start issuing duty free vehicle permits for the MPs this week, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mrs. Sumeda G. Jayasena said yesterday.

Each eligible MP could import a vehicle worth up to US$ 50,000 from the world market by paying only 18 percent of the duty value.

Last week, the Cabinet gave approval to give duty-free vehicle permits to the MPs.  The MPs who had entered Parliament newly, or have completed five years in the House were entitled to this benefit.

The members who received this benefit during the last few years when they were in the Provincial Councils are not entitled to this benefit.

Mrs. Jayasena said some members such as Minister Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan who had entered parliament during the latter stages of the last Parliament had received this benefit, and they would not be given this facility this time.

She said her Ministry would issue these permits for the MPs this week.
