Colombo Nursing School corrupt: ACNU

The All Ceylon Nurses’ Union (ACNU) president, S.B. Madiwatte alleged that money is being collected by the Colombo Nursing School (CNS) for non-academic activities in a non-transparent manner.

“Even though the president claims that nursing is the only service not tainted by bribery or corruption in Sri Lanka, over 2.6 million rupees were misused during the recently conducted graduation ceremony”, Mr. Madiwatte said.

“Each diploma holder had paid Rs.2000 to the CNS for the full uniform at the graduation but the uniform could have been made for a lesser price”, he said.

Expressing his opinion about ongoing issues, Mr. Madiwatte said, “The CNS is to collect an unrealistic Rs. 1.5 million or so for the graduation ceremony from the students enrolling for the second year. The current students at the CNS are forced to contribute financially for non academic purposes through-out the three year diploma.”

“The first year students are forced to buy Stethoscopes and blood pressure meters paying an excessive Rs.2000 through an institution appointed by the CNS administration and the students complained that an old edition of a compulsory text book had to be bought for an excessive Rs.1000.”

Mr. Madiwatte criticizing the actions of the Public Service United Nurses Union (PSUNU) said, “We strongly condemn the decisions taken by the authorities to force nursing Students islandwide to take part in a ceremony organized on behalf a health sector union leader, Muruththettuwe Ananda thero, for which money has been collected from the students to organize the event”.
