Civil Society Demands Corruption Free Governance in Sri Lanka

The Retired Senior Police Officers Association (RSPOA) in collaboration with Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) conducted a public seminar on 23rd August 2007 in Colombo on the theme “CIVIL SOCIETY DEMANDS CORRUPTION FREE GOVERNANCE IN SRI LANKA”.

The Speakers on this occasion were Mr. J.C. Weliamuna, Executive Director, TISL who spoke on ‘State and civil society collaboration in the fight against corruption’. Mr. Rienzie Wijethilake, Chairman Hatton National Bank, who spoke on the “Impact on the corporate sector due to corruption’. Ms Kishali Pinto Jayawardene, Attorney at Law, on ‘Corruption enhances Human Rights violations’. Mr. Neville Guruge, SSP- Director Investigations, CIABOC on “effect on society due to Corruption within the law enforcement sector”. Mr. S.C. Mayadunne, Retired Auditor General on ‘Corruption in Sri Lanka from the view of the Auditor General’s Department’, and Mr. Wijedasa Rajapakse, P.C., M.P and Chairman COPE who spoke on ‘Findings of the COPE – What next?’
The welcome address was given by Mr. B.A. Jeyanathan, President, RSPOA, while Mr. S.B.W. De Silva, Executive member of the RSPOA was the moderator at this meeting.

The meeting was well attended, the participation comprising mainly of retired senior police officers and members of the public.

Consequent to this seminar, there was wide coverage in the local news media.
