Buying votes with rice and mobile phones

An Opposition candidate contesting the forthcoming general elections in the Galle district is planning to give five kilos of rice to each voter. He has already ordered 150,000 bags of rice.

Sources close to this candidate said that he would distribute 15,000 bags of rice in each of the ten electorates in the Galle District.

Some leading traders in the district, who support him have already begun collecting the required quantity of rice and packing would commence soon, sources said.Arrangements have been made to distribute rice one week before the election.

Meanwhile, another candidate, representing the government, was planning to distribute 100,000 mobile phones among his supporters in the Galle District, sources said.
