Jailor caught accepting bribe from prisoners

Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate and District Judge Miss. Darshika Wimalasiri remanded until Feb. 22, a Jailor remanded in connection with an alleged bribery charge amounting to Rs. 150,000 from three persons convicted of treasure hunting, on the promise of discharging them. She also ordered that the suspect be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate on that date.

The suspect, M.D.P. Waidyaratne of Tammennakulama, Air Port Road, Anuradhapura, was a jailor attached to the Anuradhapura prison.

Investigating officers of the Bribery or Corruption Investigations Commission when producing the suspect told court that the three accused, who were imprisoned for failure to pay their fines, had been discharged on Independence Day, during the amnesty period.

The Investigation Officers said that the suspect Jailor had demanded the bribe from the prisoners claiming that it was he who had been instrumental in them being discharged and had been arrested while accepting the bribe at the Anuradhapura new bus stand.
