Approval of both parents needed to obtain passports for children

The Department of Immigration and Emigration says all passports issued for children from the Department, will be issued only with the agreement of both parents. The new regulation takes effect today.


Emigration Controller General T.B. Abeykoon said that under the new rule all children under 16 will have to come along with both parents to obtain a passport.

 
“Parents who have been divorced or legally separated can act according to the conditions stressed by a court order or the legal guardians can give the approval behalf of both parents,” he said.

 
The new regulation has been introduced to decrease the amount of children being kidnapped by a parent.
