CMC spends Rs. 2.1m a day to collect garbage

Local Government and Provincial Councils Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake informed Parliament yesterday that the Colombo Municipal Council spends Rs. 2.1 million a day to collect garbage in the city.

Responding to an oral question raised by UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake in the House, Mr Bandaranayake said 700 metric tons of garbage is collected in the city daily.He said no fee is taken for the collection from households though a tax is levied from commercial institutions. He said three private companies are involved in collection of garbage within the city.

 The Deputy Minister said Rs 320,000 is spent daily by the Sri Jayawardenepura Municipal Council while Maharagama Municipal Council spends Rs 115,594 daily for garbage collection. Moratuwa Municipal Council spends Rs 29,239 per day for the same whereas Dehiwala Mount Lavinia spends Rs. 604,081 daily for the same.
