Alleged corruption in leading girls’ school

DailyMirror:

A special investigation has revealed that the principal of a leading girls’ school in Nugegoda has allegedly committed numerous acts of corruption violating many circulars issued by the Education Ministry.

During a special investigation carried out by the Auditor General’s Department (AGD) to disclose the corruptions, it has been revealed that the principal allegedly misappropriated school funds and unethically collected money by misusing regulations of the school. The AGD investigation report stated that the accused principal has taken large amounts of money from parents in 2010 during Grade 1 admissions.

The education ministry has issued a circular stating that no fee other than the School Development Society (SDS) membership fee and the facilities and service fee can be collected from newly admitted students. However, during investigations the parents had stated that the principal had collected money from them on several occasions last year claiming that they will be utilized for various projects initiated by the SDS. The report further states that the accused official has not followed proper protocol set out by the Education ministry for the purpose of collecting funds.

Among other accusations against the principal was misusing money which was accumulated through 2009 student admissions. A sum of Rs. 4.5 million which the official claims was collected to construct the school gymnasium, had been deposited in an account (A/c No: 891177) run by the Old Girls Association (OGA). However, the OGA had been running a separate account in a private bank under A/c No: 027020217986 when  the money to construct the school gymnasium had been deposited.king water.
