Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government A.L.M. Athaulah told Parliament yesterday that it was time to consider whether the country needs Provincial Councils.
Winding up the debate on the Provincial Council Amendment Bill in the House yesterday, Minister Athaulah said it was time to determine whether the country needs Provincial Councils in other areas except the North and East.
The minister who said this was his personal view added that a large amount of funds were wasted for Provincial Councils.
He said powers should be devolved to Provincial Councils to the fullest if there are such provisions without creating unwanted issues.
