Policemen charged for drunken driving
Fourteen policemen of the Madulla police station are being prosecuted for driving under the influence of liquor and driving without a valid license.

Former Mayor guilty of corruption
Former Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake was found guilty of corruption charges and sentenced to one year’s rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 100,000 on each of two counts. The jail sentence was suspended for five years. He was charged for obtaining Rs 185,000 from the Kandy Municipal Council in April 2006 to participate in a workshop in Taiwan instead of which he had gone to Singapore with his wife.

Bribery Commission is investigating into an allegation of misappropriation a sum of Rs 621,974 by the Postmaster, Grandpass Post Office.

Traffic chief remanded
Mawanella Traffic Police Inspector was caught by Bribery Commission officials while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500 from a driver and was remanded. He had demanded the bribe to return the driving license and to refrain from prosecuting the driver for a traffic offence.

Matale Police have unearthed 232 outdated plasma kits from the house of a driver attached to the Kandy Blood bank.

Cop remanded for raping woman constable
A police constable attached to the Mount Lavinia police was remanded for allegedly raping a fellow woman constable by taking her to a temple on the pretext of taking a female into custody.

814 complaints against Police
According to the Police Commission, from January this year, 814 complaints have been received against the Police. They include complaints on indifference (263), misuse of power (199), being partisan (150), assaults (57) violence (23), illegal arrests (39), wrongful detention (30), taking bribes (20).

Fertiliser fraud
Audit Department is investigating into an alleged fraud relating to 23 metric tons of subsidized fertiliser worth Rs 3.2 million at an Agrarian Services Centre at Mahaoya in the Ampara District. It has been claimed that this quantity had been distributed among 123 farmers. A single person had prepared the applications and obtained their signatures.

A teachers’ trade union is questioning the transfers of certain teachers in national schools the Gampaha District contravening the provisions in the national policy on transfers.

Engineer remanded
An engineer in the Kadugannawa Road Development Authority office has been remanded for allegedly soliciting an illegal gratification of Rs 250,000 and accepting a bribe of Rs 100,000 to approve a conformity certificate to a sub contractor to supply gravel for the construction of a pipe line.
