Misuse of tsunami funds
The Bribery Commission is investigating into allegations of misusing tsunami funds by at least 60 public officials in the East & Southern provinces. They include ‘grama seva niladharis’ and officials in Provincial Councils, District Secretariats and the Fisheries Ministry.

Irregularities in tsunami compensation
Special teams have been sent to the East by the Bribery Commission to investigate into cases of irregularities in granting compensation and allocating houses for tsunami victims in the East. There are at least 30 complaints for inquiry.

Millions gone to the LTTE
It has been revealed that millions of dollars sent by foreign organizations for the development of the Wanni have not been used for any development projects. This is evident from the conditions seen in areas taken over by the army. Obviously the money has gone to the LTTE, says a senior official of the army.

Subsidised fertilizer sold to a private trader
A lorry transporting 193 bags of fertilizer meant for issue to farmers at subsidies prices was taken into custody by the Kahatagasdigiliya police, along with a businessman from Horowapotana and the lorry driver. Later a production assistant attached to the agricultural research centre at Kivulekada was also arrested.

Mervyn Silva assault case
The Supreme Court granted leave to proceed with the rights violation petitions filed by MTV Television channel and its journalist agagtinst Mervyn Silva and the IGP claiming Rs 110 million in compensation. The petitioners complain that the media personnel were subjected to cruel, degrading and inhuman treatment, and their freedom of movement and freedom of expression were violated by the respondent during the opening ceremony of the new overhead bridge at Peliyagoda.
