Postal Department pays Rs. 20 mln on OT

Postal department has spent rupees twenty million on overtime, department sources had revealed. Weak administration and not filling existing vacancies have created this situation.

It is said that there are about 23,000 employees and vacancies exist in all sections including the sorting out section.

When enquired about the unhealthy situation the Postmaster-General K.B. Dissanayake told the Daily Mirror that the loss to the department and the inefficiency in the department could not be settled overnight.

However, he said a new service with new techniques would be instituted within the next two years the PMG said.

For this method, the fullest cooperation of the new Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Jeevan Kumaranatunga had been given.

Mr. Dissanayake said once the existing vacancies were filled overtime payment would be stopped.
