Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has given approval for election monitors to be present at the main counting centres at the upcoming parliamentary election scheduled for April 8.
The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said that their monitors would be deployed to the main centres where election results are issued.
In the past, only the representatives of contesting political parties and independent groups were allowed to be present at counting centres. The new decision had been taken due to complaints at the last Presidential Election that opposition representatives were chased away from the counting centres.
Meanwhile, the elections authorities yesterday started the distribution of poll cards for the election. Polls cards were first sent to the election authorities in each district to be posted to voters.
