Teacher transfers not cancelled, says CTU

Teacher transfers effected during the past Presidential election had not been cancelled as instructed by the Election Commissioner by Eastern Province Education Secretary, Teachers Union said.

Teachers come under Sri Lanka Education and Administrative Service (SLEAS) “The transfers were illegal as the Elections Commissioner had said that “no transfers to take place during the elections, but they were done nevertheless,” said President of the Ceylon Teachers Union, (CTU) Joseph Stalin.

The officers were called and told that the transfers were cancelled but they had not been informed as such in writing said Mr. Stalin.

The letters of transfer which were given to at least 20 SLEAS officers were claimed by the CTU to be illegal and done for political reasons as these officers were those who certified postal votes.

These transfers had taken place in Akkaraipattu, Kalkudah, Katcharippu, Kalmunai and Batticaloa.
