Teacher trainees’ final year examination postponed
Question papers set for the final year examination at two National Colleges of Education have been stolen, compelling the authorities concerned to postpone the examination.
The examination was scheduled to be held yesterday and 3000 teacher trainees were to sit for it. The question papers had been stolen from the Mahaweli National College of Education in Polgolla and the Uva National College of Education in Bindunuwewa, Bandarawela. Some persons had broken into the rooms where the bundles of question papers were stored, and removed them.
Officials attached to the Mahaweli College of Education said that some stolen question papers had been burnt at a spot within the college premises.
Meanwhile, police have arrested 33 teacher trainees of the Uva College of Education on suspicion. The covers containing question papers had been delivered to the authorities of these two colleges by the Department of Examinations last Friday.
They had reportedly been stolen on Saturday. However, candidates had been informed of the decision to cancel the examination only last morning.
A Ministry official told Daily Mirror on condition of anonymity that investigations were being carried out regarding the incident by the police and the Department of Examinations.
