Bribery complaints top 3200 mark last year

Three thousand two hundred and twenty four (3224) complaints were received by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption last year.A spokesman for the Commission told The Island that 1,503 complaints were investigated and of the 135 apprehended by officials from the Commission, 62 persons were caught in the act of receiving bribes, arrested and prosecuted in Courts of law.

Complaints on education officials were the highest (478), followed by 435 Police personnel, 245 District Secretariat officials and 151 regarding Health Ministry/Department officials.

“The least number of complaints received was from the Immigration and Emigration Department. Some cases are yet pending in Courts,” the spokesman for the Commission said.
