election2010DailyMirror

The Peoples Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) has requested the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake not to withdraw the Competent Authority for the media appointed by him.

The election monitoring body called on him to take all steps to conduct a Free and Fair election by taking legal action against those indulging in illegal publicity and misuse of government property.

In a letter to the Commissioner PAFFREL appreciated the efforts taken by the Commissioner to implement the authority vested in him under the 17th Amendment with the view to conduct the presidential election on January 26, in a free and fair manner.

PAFFREL said some institutions and officers who disregard his orders and instructions were a serious matter. PAFFREL added it had identified issues in implementing election laws under the circumstances in which other commissions which should be activated under the 17th Amendment, were not operative,

The letter went on to draw the attention of political parties, civil organizations and the intelligentsia to this aspect.
