Weligama Police arrested a suspect said to be an illicit liquor dealer, when he offered a bribe to police officials to secure the release of a suspect arrested with illicit brew.
When Police signalled a three wheeler to stop at Polathumodera on Sunday night, the driver sped off. The police gave chase and nabbed the suspect.
They found a large quantity of illicit liquor being transported and took the driver into custody.
The following morning SI Sudath Sudasinghe, who led the Police to arrest the suspect was contacted over the phone by another illicit liquor dealer and promised a bribe of Rs 15,000 if the suspect was released.
When the caller arrived at the Police Station with Rs 10,000 of the promised sum and offered it to the SI he was arrested.
