TISL urges scrutiny of fiscal position reports by public and parliamentarians

TISL is confident that the Government Of Sri Lanka is serious in its commitment to ensure fiscal management as stipulated in the Fiscal Management (Responsibility) Act, and that this commitment is reflected by the release of its Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report 2003, made under section 10 of the Act.However, the effect of this Act could only be ensured by vigilant public scrutiny of the reports made by the Minister of Finance. Thus, the public has a specific duty on the enforcement of responsible fiscal management and we call upon the public to examine and respond to the Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report.

As the Parliament is the final arbiter of public finance, and therefore has a special responsibility to scrutinise the fiscal policies and reports tabled before parliament by the Minister of Finance. TISL requests parliamentarians to demonstrate their commitment and responsibility by giving priority to scrutinizing the government’s first Mid Year Fiscal Position Report, so that the entire process will lay a solid foundation for responsible fiscal management for the future of our country.
