The European Parliament (EP) is to hold an urgent debate on the situation in Sri Lanka tomorrow and later adopt a resolution on the issue, an official at the External Policies department of the European Parliament told yesterday.

The official Philippe Kamaris, said the EP Plenary would discuss the Sri Lankan situation tomorrow afternoon after holding a similar debate on Iran and Guinea as part of a series of debates on the violation of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

The decision to examine the situation in Sri Lanka was taken last week by the EP’s political groups, under Rule 122 of its rules of procedure.

When contacted, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Brussels said Sri Lanka’s EU Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha would also attend the session at the European Parliament.
