The Central Bank is still awaiting the infusion of an initial one billion rupees by Ceylinco Chairman Lalith Kotelawala to set in motion the vital process of settling depositors. Injecting one billion rupees by Kotelawala every fortnight for the Central Bank to expedite the repayment of aggrieved depositors was advocated when the hearing into the Fundamental Rights (FR) plea resumed before the Supreme Court recently.

The Golden Key re-payment plan expected to be placed before the Supreme Court on September 1.

A Board meeting in prison

A court order has been given to hold a meeting of the Board of Directors of the failed Finance & Guarantee (F&G) Group, a subsidiary of the Ceylinco Group at the Welikada prison where most of the directors are in remand. The directors will pass a resolution approving the setting up of a trust to facilitate repayment of some 5,600 depositors.

These depositors have invested their money in F&G Property Developers (Pvt) Ltd and F&G Real Estate Co Ltd at interest rates ranging from 22% to 31%, and 13% to 30% respectively.

137 charges against girls’ school principal

The Ministry of Education has charge sheeted a principal of a leading girls’ school in Colombo, now under interdiction,  on 137 counts, for allegedly taking money from parents in violation of existing regulations. Levying a fee for admission, coaxing parents to pay, receiving payments in an irregular manner, and violation of ministerial circulars are some of the 137 charges in the charge sheet.

This the first time an educational officer had been served a charge sheet containing so many charges. The charge sheet had been prepared on the basis of the findings of a committee comprising an accountant and an attorney at law appointed to investigate the conduct of the school principal when the Public Services Commission was still functional.

Over 1000 complaints against the police

The National Police Commission has received as many as 1,380 public complaints against the police last year with 448 of them being related to police inaction.

A report which was tabled in Parliament revealed that there were six complaints of deaths in custody, 92 complaints of assault, 35 of torture and

318 on the misuse of power.  Eleven complaints had been made against police of harassment of women and children and of child abuse while two complaints were on fatal traffic accidents involving police officers and police vehicles.  The highest number of complaints totalling 238 was from the Colombo district with 235 complaints from the Gampaha district and 161 complaints from the Galle district.

A fraudster remanded

A fraudster who had collected Rs 4.8 million from job seekers Promising to send them to foreign countries for employment was arrested in Puttalam special Bribery Commission sleuths. The fraudster had collected 125 000 rupees from each job seeker

Former principal imprisoned for corruption

Former principal of a girl’s school was found guilty of corruption charges and sentenced to eighteen months rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 35,000. She is alleged to have taken a Bribe of Rs 20,000 to admit a student to grade six in the school.

Details of an alleged foreign exchange fraud of $1.1 million by Ceylinco Shriram Ltd when purchasing a building fro Cetlinco Real Estate Holdings LLC USA has been revealed to the Attorney Genera’s Department and the CID fro necessary action.
