Minister Amunugama highlights corruption in the public sector

amunugama.jpgTransparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) commends the Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs, Hon. Dr Sarath Amunugama on his recent statement that in Sri Lanka the public sector is overflowing with corruption and lack of productivity and that until the elimination of corruption and enhancement of productivity, the country cannot grow and prosper.

While fully endorsing the Minister’s view, TISL sees it as a transparent and sustainable national value-adding public statement.

Delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the Financial Journalism Course co-sponsored by the Securities & Exchange Commission and the Mass Media Ministry, the Minister is reported to have said that in at least 140 public sector institutions, most of the employees are merely drawing salaries out of the tax-payers’ money without doing any work. Lanka E-News website reported that the wastage in these public institutions is much worse than what Sakviti did.

The Minister had identified corruption and inefficiency in the public sector as the main factors hindering the development in the country.
