Trade Union leaders and activists agreed to develop an action plan to unearth corruption, frauds and malpractices in the public sector in order to mitigate corruption in Sri Lanka. They will not only reveal corruption but also send the information to Parliament, CIABOC and other relevant authorities for necessary action.
Trade union leaders also agreed to form an alliance with young parliamentarians to reveal corrupt activities through them to Parliament. They also emphasized the need for a system where whistleblowers are protected by law. They pledged their support to work closely with TISL to mitigate corruption in the country.
The decision to develop an action plan was made at a workshop organised by TISL to enhance knowledge on corruption and anti- corruption initiatives. Twenty seven trade union leaders attended the two- day workshop held at the Dons Lake Resort in Puwakpitiya Awissawella recently.
Delivering the keynote address at the workshop, TISL Executive Director S. Ranugge appealed to the trade unions to work together to initiate the Right to Information laws in Sri Lanka.”Right to Information would empower trade unions to gain access to facts, figures and information. Armed with accurate information, trade unions can work together towards eradicating corruption” he said.
A.K.Chandrakantha, W.A.Jayasundara, Anada Jayasekara, Shantha Kulathunga and Shan Wijethunge conducted the sessions at the workshop.
