Improving relationship with the public

Yakkalamulla Pradesheeya Sabha in the Galle district has taken several positive steps to improve their relationship with the public to in accordance with the action plans developed last year with the assistance of Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL).

Following TISL intervention it has been decided to open the public gallery to the citizens when the monthly council meetings are held. An information officer has been appointed to deal with the public and council records are now made available for public scrutiny. These included the council meeting minutes, council budget and the final accounts.

For the first time in the council’s history, it has been decided to appoint taxpayers to the four statutory standing committees and a separate room has been allocated for the use of the citizens’ committee..

During the last quarter of 2012 TISL held several workshops and prepared an action plan unit in the council and officials were tasked with achieving identified tasks, according to their job profiles. The Yakkalamulla LGA has taken steps to translate the knowledge and training obtained into positive actions.
