Sri Lanka’s Customs Department to install new CCTV cameras at its head office

Sri Lanka Customs Department has decided to install new Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the Department’s head office since the old cameras are now malfunctioning.

Director General of the Customs Department, Jagath Wijeweera has said the CCTV cameras that are currently in place are not functioning and a new set of cameras would be installed.

Accordingly, he has said that 30 CCTV cameras would be installed at the head office building.

He has explained that the CCTV camera that was in place in the office of the Customs Officer, who was recently arrested for allegedly taking a bribe, had not been operating at the time of the arrest.

The relevant CCTV camera had been out of order for 10 days prior to the arrest.

The official noted that the Customs officers who are innocent can be cleared if CCTV cameras could capture their movements.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption arrested the Director and Head of the Customs Preventive Division earlier this month while he was accepting a bribe at his office.
