The police yesterday said publicising the preferential numbers of the candidates contesting at the forthcoming general election was something that had to be sorted out by the Legislative.

“Currently there is an issue with the publicising the preferential numbers of the candidates at the polls.  Publicising those preferential numbers is something that has to be sorted out by the Legislative,” DIG Gamini Navaratne said.DIG Navaratne who is also in charge of the Police Election Desk told media in Nuwara Eliya the Police were compelled to act according to the election laws.  No one should become annoyed with the Police.

Elaborating further, he said: “by this time, there is a special programme set in connection with Election Duty. In 42 electorates, 413 points operate covering the security requirements.  At this moment, the Police Officers are engaged in removing posters and display boards which is a very complicated task.

“The general public is watching the Police.  How the Police act about publicity should be understood by the candidates.”

Commenting on the election violence he said the election desk had received a total of 106 election related complaints so far.

Out of them the complaints connected to violence amount to 5% and 65 persons have already been taken into Police custody and are in remand.
