law&orderDailyMirror

The Mahanayake of Malwatte  Chapter Most Ven. Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera said there must be law and order in the country and that he would send the copies of the Supreme Court judgments presented to him by Attorney-at-law Upul Jayasuriya regarding the conduct of  the media to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, under a separate cover.

Attorney Upul Jayasuriya told the Mahanayake that there is a judgment which had been delivered by a five judge bench headed by the Chief Justice Asoka de Silva to adhere to  Clause 104B(5)(a)of the Constitution governing the electronic and print media.  He told the Mahanayake that this order had been blatantly violated and that there was no recourse other than the Gods and the Triple Gem. Therefore, he said since the Mahanayake is the custodian of the rights of the people, the lawyers have come to seek the Theras intervention on the matter.

The Lawyers also pointed out to the Mahanayake that the Son-in-law of General Fonseka had been called to the CID though he had not done any offence.  They added that this is the present situation in the country.

The Mahanayake assured the Lawyers present that he would send the copies of the judgments presented to him with a covering letter to the President.

Around 275 lawyers drawn from various parts of the country were present at the meeting with the Mahanayake Thera

The Secretary of the Association, Attorney-at-law Gunaratne Wanninayake was also present.
Attorney Jayasuriya further said that if there is a break-down of civil society, then there would be no law and order in the country.  He said that as a last resort they have come to him.

  1. I had to comment since your post was really interesting, but I was wondering if the new case law that will bring Twitter, Facebook, Myspace into the 21 century is going to happen anytime soon. How will these new technologies fit into our current system and how can they be controlled across cyberspace?
